Thermometers, Scripps calibrated

Scripps supplies precision ingraved stem mercury immersion thermometers manufacturered by Kahl Scientific Instruments Corporation. All thermometers read in degrees Celcius, with 0.1 °C divisions, but come in two different ranges; +8 to 26 °C or +4 to 22 °C. Although they are calibrated against certified primary standards during the manufactureing process, upon receipt, they are recalibrated by the Oceanic Data Facility at SIO to 0.01 °C accuracy. Currently Scripp's calibrated thermometers are being provided to Scripp's Pier and SE Farallon Island.

Salinity analysis

Salinity samples are run on the Guildline, Model 8410, inductive salinometer. The Guildline PortASal is calibrated before and after each group of samples with a substandard seawater. Periodic checks on the conductivity of the substandard is made by comparison with IAPSO Standard Seawater. Salinity values are read to four decimal places (0.0001), and are calculated using the algorithms for the Practical Salinity Scale, 1979 (UNESCO, 1981a). Salinity values are rounded up to two decimal places (0.01) after conversion to PSU and reported to two decimal places.
